The Back Nine Starts Here: Why I Built Back Nine StrongI played a lot of golf with my dad as a teenager.
In all honesty, it was probably the only real quality time we spent together. But it stuck with me, those early mornings, long walks, and quiet conversations between shots. Looking back, that’s where my love for the game really began.
As I grew older, golf became more social a fun way to spend a Saturday, but also more competitive. I worked hard at it, always chasing that next personal best, eventually getting my handicap down to 6.7.Then life happened.
Marriage. Three kids. A full-time job. And like so many of us, golf slowly slipped away.
Fifteen years went by before I picked up a club again.
When I finally did, about three years ago, I was older, heavier, and far less flexible than I’d like to admit. But the moment I stepped back onto the course, I felt something I hadn’t in years. It wasn’t just nostalgia, it was home.Reconnecting With the Game (and Myself)These past few years have been about more than rebuilding my golf swing.
They’ve been about rebuilding me, my fitness, my energy, and my mindset.
Grinding my way from a 22 handicap back down to 13 has been a journey of patience, sweat, and more than a few laughs. It’s reminded me what golf really gives us:Time outdoorsTime away from screensTime with old mates you’ve reconnected with, where the banter flows, the beers taste better, and the laughs are louder than the swings are smooth. Why Back Nine Strong ExistsAs a trained Mental Health First Aider, I’ve become even more aware of how vital those small things are, the social connection, the fresh air, the movement.
Golf has quietly given me all of that again.
It’s not just exercise; it’s therapy, camaraderie, purpose, all wrapped up in 18 holes.Sure, the shank, the lip-out putt, or the sliced drive can spike the blood pressure now and again (we’ve all been there), but it’s a small price to pay for what the game gives back.Back Nine Strong was born out of that realisation, that this isn’t about chasing distance or vanity.
It’s about staying strong enough to keep playing the game we love, for as long as we can.
The MissionTo help golfers over 40 rediscover their strength, mobility, and confidence.
To show that the best years, on the course and in life, don’t have to be behind us.
To build a community of players who share the same goal: to play longer, play stronger, and enjoy every step of the walk.
Because if we look after ourselves, physically, mentally, socially, there’s no reason the back nine of life can’t be the best nine yet.Welcome to Back Nine Strong! Here’s to feeling better, playing better, and keeping the game alive, for life.
